Johnston served in the S.C. House of Representatives, as Governor, and as a U.S. Senator. Liz Patterson served in the S.C. House of Representatives and in the U.S. Congress.

The Opera House was built in 1881 and was located on the western end of Morgan Square. The theatre was on the second floor, above the Post Office. The building was demolished in 1907.

304. Pacific Mills Pacific MillsTextilesPacific Mills of Boston purchased 750 acres from the Groce family in the 1920s and built a textile plant. There was a model village with a school and 375 homes. The plant and village were named Lyman in memory of Arthur T. Lyman, president of Pacific Mills from 1900 to 1915.

309. Pacolet, aerial view Pacolet, aerial viewUpstate and BeyondThis aerial view shows the Pacolet Mill and town. This land along the Pacolet River is one of the earliest areas settled in the county. A Pacolet station for the railroad opened in 1859. The mill began in 1882. The village that grew around the mill was known as Trough Shoals after the river rapids there. As the mill grew so did the Pacolets: Pacolet Mills, Central Pacolet, Pacolet Park and Pacolet.

It was built in the 1840s and was originally known as the Walker House. The hotel burned in 1882. Later the Hotel Franklin was located on the same site. The Denny's Building is now at this location. Horse-drawn carriages are in the foreground of this image.

Pierce operated this Ford dealership in the late 1930s. The Headquarters of the Spartanburg County Public Libraries is now on the site.
