Olin D. Johnston
People
Olin D. Johnston is on the right with daughter Elizabeth (Liz) Patterson. Johnston's daughter Sallie is on the left with her uncle David Jennings. Johnston served in the S.C. House of Representatives, as Governor, and as a U.S. Senator. Liz Patterson served in the S.C. House of Representatives and in the U.S. Congress.

Copy, drawing of Opera House. The artist is unknown. The Opera House was built in 1881 and was located on the western end of Morgan Square. The theatre was on the second floor, above the Post Office. The building was demolished in 1907.

Pacific Mills

Pacific Mills of Boston purchased 750 acres from the Groce family in the 1920s and built a textile plant. There was a model village with a school and 375 homes. The plant and village were named Lyman in memory of Arthur T. Lyman, president of Pacific Mills from 1900 to 1915.

First known as Trough Shoals, Pacolet Mills was chartered in 1882 for operations on the Pacolet River.

Religion
First organized in 1884 as the Trough Shoals Baptist Church. The church was named for the shoals in the Pacolet River above the dam at Pacolet Mills. In 1902 the church was renamed Pacolet Mills Baptist.

This aerial view shows the Pacolet Mill and town. This land along the Pacolet River is one of the earliest areas settled in the county. A Pacolet station for the railroad opened in 1859. The mill began in 1882. The village that grew around the mill was known as Trough Shoals after the river rapids there. As the mill grew so did the Pacolets: Pacolet Mills, Central Pacolet, Pacolet Park and Pacolet.

Piedmont House

The Piedmont House was an early hotel that stood on East Main Street in Spartanburg. It was built in the 1840s and was originally known as the Walker House. The hotel burned in 1882. Later the Hotel Franklin was located on the same site. The Denny's Building is now at this location. Horse-drawn carriages are in the foreground of this image.

This company was located on the southeast corner of Church and Broad streets. Thomas B. Pierce operated this Ford dealership in the late 1930s. The Headquarters of the Spartanburg County Public Libraries is now on the site.

Post Office

The Post Office, built in 1906, was located on North Church Street. After 1930 offices of the Soil Conservation Service occupied the building. In 1967 the building was demolished.
