The Cleveland Hotel was built on the site where the Spartan Inn once stood on West Main Street. The location was near the site where Jesse Cleveland had once operated a store. The Cleveland was one of Spartanburg's finest hotels. The building was demolished in 1992.

Built on Magnolia Street in the late 1880s, this structure was known as the Cleveland Building. Jesse and John Cleveland had businesses here. Many law offices were located in what became known as the Cleveland Law Range.

The monument was originally placed in the intersection of South Church and Henry streets in 1910. This area was known as Kirby Hill. Later the monument was moved to Duncan Park in 1964.
