Camp Wadsworth troops
Military
Spartanburg was chosen by the army for a World War I training camp. The camp was named in honor of James S. Wadsworth, a General in the Union Army. In 1917 and 1918 over 20,000 troops were encamped several miles west of the city. This view shows troops marching.

The Carolina Theatre was located in the Montgomery Building. This was the appearance of the theatre after a remodeling in the 1970s. The theatre was originally called the Montgomery Theatre and offered stage performances and film presentations.

Education
Carver High School on South Church Street opened in 1938. Carver was an African American high school and junior high school when this photograph was made in the 1950s.

Central Methodist Church
Religion
This church has had many renovations after its construction in 1837 on North Church Street. It is the oldest church in the city of Spartanburg and is now known as Central United Methodist Church.

Central National Bank

All six of Spartanburg's banks failed during the Depression. The Central National Bank, located in the Andrews Building on Morgan Square, was the last to close in March 1933.

Chapman Building under construction

The eight-story Chapman Building was built in 1913 and was Spartanburg's first skyscraper. C. Brewster Chapman sold the building in 1922 to Isaac Andrews and A.M. Law. The building became known as the Andrews Building after Andrews bought out his partner. Visible to the right of the construction is the brick building where Spartanburg's first library, the Kennedy Library, had been located. Wright Scruggs Shoe Co. is to the left of the construction.The headquarters for Extended Stay America is now in this area.

Chero-Cola truck

Chero-Cola was bottled locally, first on Liberty Street and later on Morgan Square. In the 1927 Spartanburg City Directory, the business was listed as the Chero-Cola Nehi Company. After a reformulation in 1934, the beverage was renamed Royal Crown Cola. The Spartanburg operation ceased in the 1940s. This truck on Morgan Square dates from about 1920. The company motto of 'there's none so good' is advertised on the truck, above the selling price of 5 cents.
