266. Montgomery House Montgomery HouseDowntown Spartanburg; BusinessConstructed in 1909, this distinctive building on South Pine Street was once the home of Walter Montgomery. In this photo from the 1950s, Cudd & Coan Inc. Insurance and National Fidelity Insurance Co. are located here. The building was also manse for First Presbyterian Church in the late 1930s-early 1940s. The building was located across the street from the home of Dexter Edgar Converse, then later across the street from the Spartanburg County Public Library. The Library moved to 151 South Church Street in 1997. Mid-South Management now owns the building.

True's Store has replaced Greenewald's in the Duncan Building which had replaced the third county courthouse. The Duncan Building contained the first elevator in Spartanburg. The Opera House is still standing in this image, but was demolished in 1907. The Spartan Inn behind the Daniel Morgan Monument burned a few years after this photograph was taken. A trolley car and tracks are in center.

Many people used the trolleys for work and shopping. Old cannon, cannon balls, and an iron fence were then at the base of the Daniel Morgan Monument. This view of Morgan Square, includes the Merchants & Farmers Bank, and the Chapman Building (later called the Andrews Building). Also pictured are the trolley tracks which ran through the center of town.

This early view could also represent a gathering for a session at Spartanburg's third courthouse, on the far right. The Daniel Morgan Monument was placed in the square in 1881 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens. General Daniel Morgan had been commander of the victorious patriot troops. Behind the monument are the Opera House and the Merchant's Hotel.
