22. Aug. W. Smith Company Aug. W. Smith CompanyDowntown Spartanburg; BusinessThe first Aug. W. Smith Company store opened in downtown Spartanburg in 1901 on East Main Street. Aug. W. Smith moved to this store on the corner of East Main and Liberty streets in 1926. Aug. W. Smith was known for quality merchandise in its various store locations in Spartanburg. Bishop's Furniture has been operating in this building since the 1980s.

In 1926 a new store was opened farther east on Main Street. Aug. W. Smith was known for quality merchandise in its various store locations in Spartanburg. The last store location to close was at the Hillcrest Mall on the east side of Spartanburg in 1984.

Beginning of air mail in South Carolina Beginning of air mail in South CarolinaTransportationOn May 1, 1928, Eugene Brown flew the Pitcairn Mailwing into the Spartanburg Memorial Airport, arriving late in the evening. A crowd of thousands greeted the pilot on this first air mail stop in the area. The complete air mail route was from New York to New Orleans. Pitcairn Aviation provided mail service along the East Coast and later became Eastern Airlines. This photo shows the Pitcairn hangar at the Spartanburg Memorial Airport. South Carolina's first commercial airport opened in Spartanburg in 1927.

The bus stands in front of the first Bethel sanctuary at the corner of South Church and Lee streets. A new church opened in 1953 and this building was demolished in 1967.

33. Billy Sunday Tabernacle Billy Sunday TabernacleReligionBilly Sunday came to Spartanburg for six weeks in 1922 in the midst of an American religious revival. This building was constructed near the courthouse on the west side of Magnolia Street. Thousands came to the revival services. The building was torn down after Sunday left Spartanburg.

35. Bivings/Bomar House at Glendale Bivings/Bomar House at GlendaleHomesJames Bivings built this Greek Revival-style home in 1836 near the site of Wofford's Iron Works. The house features front and back porticos. Bivings built a large cotton mill in the area that became known as Bivingsville (later Glendale). Dexter Edgar Converse bought the house and enlarged it when he took over the mill from Bivings. Later John Bomar lived here and the house became known as the Bomar House. The house is still standing but is now unoccupied.
