This church building replaced an earlier structure that burned in 1928.

Greenewald's

In 1886 the Greenewald brothers opened Greenewald's Inc., a men's clothing store, in downtown Spartanburg. By 1910 the store was located on the corner of South Church and West Main streets, where it remained until closing in the 1980s. Wild Wing Cafe is now in the building.

The art deco Greyhound Bus station opened on August 17, 1940 on the corner of North Liberty and Dunbar streets. On the site now is a student center built by the First Baptist Church in 2003.

Hampton Guards
Military
The Hampton Guards, also known as Company F South Carolina Infantry, served on the Mexican border in 1916. On August 5, 1917, all State Guard units became Federal Troops. Company F became Company F, 118th Infantry, Thirtieth Division, United States Army. The soldiers left Camp Sevier in Greenville for France on May 4, 1918.

Highland Elementary School
Education
Highland Elementary School for African American students was at West Henry Street and Reidville Road. The school opened in 1915 and closed in 1971.

Hotel Franklin

The Hotel Franklin opened on East Main Street in 1923. This view from about 1950 shows the hotel during its heyday. The extension to the rear of the building was the earlier Finch Hotel fronting on Liberty Street. The Franklin was designed by local architect Sir Peyton Tinsley. The Schuyler Building on South Church Street is in the extreme right rear of the photo. The deteriorating hotel building was imploded in 1988 and today the Denny's Building and Plaza are on the site.

Hotel Richmond

This building was converted from apartments, the Hertzog Apartment House, to the Hotel Richmond in the 1930s. The hotel stood beside the Y.M.C.A. on East Main Street for many years.
