First Baptist Church picnic

Preparation for a picnic on the front lawn of the third First Baptist Church building. To the left is the Rev. William Ball, Sr., pastor of the church from 1919 until 1932. This sanctuary burned in a fire in 1962. The fourth and present First Baptist sanctuary was built on the same location on East Main Street.

First National Bank

First National Bank was located on the northwest corner of Morgan Square and Magnolia Street. It was the first bank in Spartanburg County, established in 1871. An earlier building was replaced by this building in 1915. This structure was later widened. The bank shut down during the Depression, and was reopened as Citizens & Southern National Bank in 1933.

This sanctuary on East Main Street is the fourth home of the First Presbyterian congregation. The church began in 1854 and dedicated this building in 1926 at the corner of East Main and Chestnut streets.

Ground was broken in 1924 for the present sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church at the corner of East Main Street and Chestnut Street. The church was dedicated on January 17, 1926. This group, mainly children, posed in front of the third church building in the 1920s.

This elegant home at the intersection of Highway 295 and Union Street was used as a tavern when built by Anthony Foster with slave labor around 1806. The columns were added about 1860 and the piazzas in 1915. Senator John C. Calhoun was a frequent visitor in his travels to Washington, D.C.

National Guardsmen and Highway Patrol troopers separate marchers in downtown Gaffney in May of 1968. The arrest of two black teens led to protests by blacks about local discrimination. Governor Robert McNair declared a state of emergency and the city was placed under a curfew for nine days.

An advertisement for Garrett Springs praised its 'healing powers and invigorating climate, which attract thousands of visitors every summer.' The springs were located off Heywood Avenue near the bridge over Lawson's Fork.
