103. Converse Mill Converse MillTextilesThe iron industry was the first manufacturer along the Pacolet River at Hurricane Shoals, and cotton mills followed. Dexter Edgar Converse brought success to the area with the Clifton Manufacturing Company. The town of Clifton Mill No. 3 assumed the name of Converse after his death in 1899. The mill operated from 1880 to 1965.

105. Converse students going to pick cotton. Converse students going to pick cotton.EducationOn October 2, 1942 the first group of Converse College students went to pick cotton in the county. The cotton crop was large and the manpower shortage was acute. On October 8, 1942 all students in the county, including Wofford and Converse students, were excused to pick cotton. The effort continued for several weeks.

110. Cowpens Battle Monument Cowpens Battle MonumentUpstate and Beyond; MilitaryThis stone monument was built in 1930. It has plaques and inscriptions that record the units and events of the Battle of Cowpens. The monument was once located on land off Highways 110 and 11. It was moved in 1978 to Cowpens National Battlefield. The obelisk of gray granite now stands in front of the visitors center.

113. Cumming Street School Cumming Street SchoolEducationThis school opened in 1926 for African American students in grades one through nine. Later grades through eleven were added. The school closed in 1969 after court-ordered integration.

114. Daniel Morgan Monument Daniel Morgan MonumentDowntown SpartanburgThis view from Morgan Square is north toward Magnolia Street. The Daniel Morgan Monument was placed in the square in 1881 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens. General Daniel Morgan had been commander of the victorious patriot troops. The canon and cannon balls at the base of the monument were contributed for scrap metal during World War II. The fourth courthouse is in the background.

115. Dr. Henry Nelson Snyder Dr. Henry Nelson SnyderPeoplePresident of Wofford College, Dr. Henry Nelson Snyder (on the left), is pictured with W.D. Sullivan of Tumbling Shoals, South Carolina. Mr. Sullivan was the only remaining survivor of the freshman class of 1854, and he attended the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the college's opening. That celebration took place October 18th and 19th, 1929.
