Description
On his October 12 , 1927 visit to Spartanburg , Charles Lindbergh landed his famous airplane at the Spartanburg Memorial Airport . Dedicated September 10 , 1927 , this was the first commercial airport in South Carolina . The 'Spirit of St . Louis ' is pictured in front of the Pitcairn Aviation hangar at the Spartanburg Memorial Airport . The airplane is now in the Smithsonian Institution , National Air and Space Museum , in Washington , D.C .

Over 400 historical photographs from the Herald-Journal newspaper , generally ranging in dates from the 1900s to the 1940s . Most of the photographs are of Spartanburg and the surrounding area , and most were taken by Alfred Tennyson Willis or his son Robert (Bob) Willis .
