Henry Willis received the War Department Military Aviator's Certificate in 1913. In February 1914 he received an Expert Aviator's Certificate from the Aero Club of America.
Trolleys transported Spartanburg crowds to events like the circus. In an advertisement in the Spartanburg Herald, the Ringling Brothers production of 1914 promised the "Greatest circus event in the History of America".
Smoke rises from the roof of Efird's Department Store. A fire ladder is propped against the building. Efird's was located on 129 East Main Street. The store remained open until 1965.
Motorcycles were frequently photographed by Alfred Willis. He may have been excited about this motorcycle, but the ladies and children pictured here did not appear very enthusiastic.
