Although several congregations in downtown Spartanburg predate it, the Episcopal Church of the Advent occupies the city's oldest church building, a stately granite edifice erected slowly through the 1850s and 1860s. Since its founding in the 1840s, the church has played a sponsoring role in many worthy causes and its congregation has included many business, political, and intellectual leaders. The documents and photographs selected here from the church's archive add depth and nuance to Spartanburg's social history and illustrate the extensive impact made by one of Spartanburg's many faith communities.
